What’s the Difference Between HVAC Air Filters?
An important part of furnace and air conditioner maintenance is inspecting and changing the filter. HVAC air filters help prevent allergens and other pollutants from circulating throughout your home and keep the delicate electronics inside your heating and cooling system free of dust and debris.
Replacing air filters is an easy maintenance task, but some homeowners get caught up with the sheer number of filter options available. There are three main types of filters and the best one for your home will depend on your heating and cooling system along with your indoor air quality needs.
Standard Filters
Also referred to as fiberglass filters, these are the most common types of HVAC air filters. They’re made up of woven fiberglass and can trap large airborne particles. These filters are popular because they’re disposable and affordable—usually costing between $4 and $7 per filter. However, standard filters lack air purifying features and will usually need to be replaced monthly.
Pleated Filters
Known as performance filters, pleated filters are usually manufactured from synthetic fiber. The pleats in the filter are meant to effectively filter out smaller particles, like dust, pollen, dander, and mold. These HVAC air filters are a bit more expensive, averaging around $8 to $12 each, but usually last about 60 days.
Media Filters
These are the best type of HVAC air filters for capturing tiny particles within your home, including dust, odors, and bacteria. These filters are usually about 5 inches thick and can last 6 to 8 months before they need to be replaced.
Choosing the best HVAC air filters for your home will be based on your family’s needs and the type of heating or cooling system you have installed. Not all filters will work with all HVAC systems.
